2016 Europeans bought 15 million new cars and Golf remained the most searched model, although sales fell, according to data JATO. Sandero was among the models with the largest increases in volume, and other models are Hyundai Tucson went well, Fiat Tipo, Skoda Superb, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Opel Karl.

Volkswagen Golf remained the most searched model, with 492,000 cars sold, up 7% less than in 2015. The top five was completed by Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, Ford Fiesta and Opel Corsa. The five models have found over 1.6 million customers, over 10% of a market with more than 200 car models.

2016 will go down in history as the year in which SUVs surpassed first quarter of the market, reaching 3.88 million units, while the C-segment exceeded three million units, but advancing by only 4% in while SUVs were up 21%, according to JATO data.

B segment grew by only 2.7% and MPVs fell by 3%, while sales of mini class cars decreased by 0.7%. It's not any segment went great, recording declines of 4.4%.

SUVs have increased due to models like the Nissan Qashqai (234,000 units), Renault Captur (217,000), Volkswagen Tiguan (180,000), Peugeot 2008 (176,000 units) and Opel Mokka (164,000).

Dacia Sandero has sold 170,000 cars in 29 European countries, the advance is 14%. Sandero finished last year ranked 22 best-selling models, and Duster was 30, with sales up 11%.

Among the models with the largest increases in sales include Hyundai Tucson (+ 304%), Renault Kadjar (161%), BMW X1 (+ 130%), Volkswagen Touran (+ 51%), Fiat 500X (+ 42%).

Some models have volume declines between 7 and 10 percent: Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, Volkswagen Passat, Peugeot 308.
